SOLID SILVER.
Hand Crafted by Nick Palmer

Recent History

Traditional Quality

Sheffield is a city steeped in the history and tradition of fine metalwork. Many associated trades survive today, supported by a network of commercial and independant makers, jewellers and silversmiths.

Metalwork and original design continue to feed the culture of the city and Sheffield is still synonymous with outstanding quality the world over.

The weight and finish of Nick's work shows a real love for metal; substantial and generous, never compromising on materials; each piece skillfully crafted with the hand and eye of a practiced sculptor. Produced in 925 sterling silver and carefully hand finished before hallmarking and polishing.

Only genuine gemstones are used unless stated.

Nick graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in 2007 with a Batchelor of Arts degree in Metalwork and Jewellery, following an extended period of work as a theatre design-assistant and prop builder.

After graduating he was invited to join the graduate technical team fabricating a new permanent trophy for the St. Leger Stakes steeplechase; one of the longest running horse racing events in the country.

In 2014 he was commissioned to design and produce the 'gift' element of the trophy; a silver rosebowl commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the begining of the First World War.

He continues to design and manufacture jewellery, is developing his silversmithing techniques and continues to expand his practice; to enable himself to create exciting new silverware in the future.

All jewellery designed and produced by Nick Palmer.

The site that you are currently viewing represents my current work along with archive images of some past work.

This is a recently established business, built upon my love of silver, a lifelong interest in all kinds of jewellery and the range of skills that I have aquired and practiced over the last decade.

Much of the work shown is produced using the lost wax process; a technique involving the manufacture of silicone moulds from my original hand-carved resin models.

From these moulds, wax replicas are cast which are 'invested' into a cement casing and subsequently melted out to leave a void which is then filled with mollten silver.

After cooling, the cement is removed, leaving a rough silver form and from this point begins the lengthy process of cleaning, filing, sanding and polishing to the desired finish.

The casting process generates a unique pattern of textures, pitting and fine surface cracks which have to be removed. On certain pieces, I have deliberately retained some of these to add an interesting texture to the surface.

I am currently in the process of establishing an online retail outlet and in the meantime can answer any enquiries through the contact link on this site.

Naturally, I hope you enjoy my work, and that you will call back from time to time to see new items and features as things develop.

Thanks for your time and please feel free to tell your friends.
